A dishwasher is the busiest mechanical appliance in a built-in kitchen. It runs a pump, heats its own water, operates a latch and a diverter, and drains, several times a week for fifteen years. It is also the appliance that shows you its own results every day, which is why most calls start with something visible on the glassware rather than with a fault code.

Cloudy glass is two different problems

Etching and film look similar and have opposite fixes, so it is worth telling them apart before anyone changes detergent.

Film is deposit sitting on the surface. It wipes off, or comes away with an acid rinse, and held under a light a filmed glass looks dull and slightly patchy. It is a rinse and dosing problem, not a broken machine.

Etching is damage to the glass surface itself, caused over time by excess detergent plus heat. It does not come off, because there is nothing on the surface to remove, and no repair reverses it. Telling the two apart before anyone changes detergent is worth two minutes.

Rinse aid is the variable most people overlook. It lowers the surface tension of the final rinse so water sheets off the load instead of beading and drying in place — which is both what keeps glass clear and what makes drying work at all on a machine that dries by condensation. The dispenser flap and its seal are consumables; when a machine that always dried well stops drying, check the dispenser before suspecting the heater.

Cycles that run far longer than the display predicted

A dishwasher predicts its cycle length and then extends it when a stage does not complete. Nine times out of ten the stage that will not complete is heating, and there are only a few reasons for that: a thermistor reading high so the control believes it has arrived, a heating circuit that has lost its element or its relay, or an incoming supply that is far colder than the machine assumes because the water heater is at the other end of the house.

That last one is not a fault, but it is worth ruling out before ordering anything: run the kitchen tap hot before starting the cycle and see whether the run time changes.

Still wet at the end of the cycle

Modern dishwashers dry mostly by condensation against a cool stainless tub, sometimes assisted by a fan or a drying agent, not by a hot element baking the load. Three things break that: rinse aid that has run out, a load packed so that plastics shadow each other, and a final rinse that never reached temperature because the heating circuit or the thermistor has drifted.

Water standing in the tub is a drain problem, and the order to check is: filter basket, then the drain hose loop or air gap, then the drain pump itself. A partly blocked filter also starves the wash pump, which shows up as clean lower rack and gritty upper rack — the upper spray arm is the first thing to lose pressure.

Spray arms, filters and where pressure goes

Wash performance is a pressure story. The pump develops a fixed amount of it and everything downstream either uses it properly or wastes it.

Pull the arms and hold them up to a light. Partly blocked outlets change the spray pattern long before they block anything outright, and the machine has no way to detect it happening. Spin each arm on its spindle while it is out: play in the bearing means it wobbles rather than rotating true, and a wobbling arm throws water at the tub wall instead of at the load. Check the filter basket at the same time, because a loaded filter starves the pump directly — and the upper arm, being furthest from it, is the first thing to lose pressure. Grit on the upper rack with a clean lower rack is that fault almost every time.

The other pressure loss is a diverter that is no longer sending water where the cycle intends. That one is not visible from inside the tub, and it is one of the reasons a machine can look mechanically perfect and still wash badly.

Doors, hinges and panel-ready fronts

A panel-ready dishwasher carries the weight of a custom cabinet panel on its door springs. When the door starts dropping instead of holding at part-open, the cable or spring has stretched or broken, and continuing to use it puts the load onto the hinge mounts. It is a straightforward fix early and an expensive one late.

A panel-ready dishwasher is set up for the weight of the custom door panel it was fitted with. If the panel has ever been changed, or a heavier one made, the spring tension is wrong for it and the door either drops or fights back. That is adjustable, and it is worth adjusting before the hinge mounts take the load.

Levelling matters more than it looks. These machines are shimmed and screwed to the countertop or the side cabinets, and a unit that has settled — or that was never true — will not drain fully, will not seal evenly along the door, and will sometimes leave a puddle nobody can explain. We check that at the diagnostic with a level rather than assuming the appliance is the problem.
